How Saying “No” Really Means Saying “Yes”

Earlier this week a friend asked me to join a call Thursday night to discuss writing blogs for a new online social group.

Hmm…this sounds cool I thought.  I told her I wanted to think about it.

I thought about the commitment for two days and as I thought about it more – the thought of committing to one more thing in my life felt heavy.  It didn’t feel exciting and instead I was already feeling stressed out thinking about having one more weeknight commitment.

Sound familiar?

Yeah, it is all too familiar for me right now.

I’m super busy.  There are a lot of things going on right now.  This is definitely a great opportunity, and I’m sure one that would be fun and exciting, and help to grow my business.  But sometimes over-committing myself means that I rarely see Jonny, or that we don’t eat dinner until 8:30 at night, and there’s no time for anything much after dinner and dishes so we go to bed, get up and do it all again the next day.

So as I thought about this new commitment I thought, “I’m going to say no to this…because by saying No, I’m actually saying Yes to having a night off and I’m saying Yes to nurturing other areas in my life, like my relationship with Jonny (or my sanity).”  As soon as I decided that, I felt this weight lift and I knew I had made the right decision.

Would joining this group be good for my personal and professional development? Probably.

Is it worth it to me right now to give up the only free night of my week?  Not really.

Do I feel better having said “No” than having said an over-committed “yes”?  HELL YES.

So with that – what is something that you can say “no” to today where it will actually help open up other areas of your life you’ve been wanting to say “yes” to for a long time?

You can do it!  Just say “No!”  It will feel good – I promise.
